Originally from Indonesia, tempeh has been a staple source of protein for the region. Recently, this newly crowned super food has found a fan following in the western world for all its natural goodness.
An Indonesian version of soy, tempeh is the name of a cake-shaped product that is made by culturing and fermenting soybeans. While it’s similar to tofu, in that it is a product of soy, the benefits it offers in terms of nutrition and texture are different from that of tofu.
Health benefits of tempeh
Packed with protein – Tempeh is made from soybean, considered one of those most nutritious foods available. One of these benefits includes high levels of protein. This makes tempeh of particular importance to vegetarians who sometimes suffer from low protein owing to animal meat being one of the main sources of protein in a typical diet chart.
Rich in riboflavin (vitamin B2) – Riboflavin is an essential B vitamin that is crucial for many bodily functions like cellular processes and energy metabolism. The human body requires riboflavin to correctly digest fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Tempeh is a good source of tempeh and can help avoid conditions like anaemia and migraines.
High in dietary fibre – Besides being rich in protein, tempeh is also a great source of fibre. The high fibre actually helps to reduce cholesterol, high blood pressure and lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Good source of iron, potassium and calcium – No wonder the world is lapping up tempeh – this wonder food is packed with essential nutrients like iron, potassium and calcium.
Easy to digest – Unlike many other hard-to-digest soy foods like tofu, tempeh is a fermented product, which makes it easier to digest by those who might otherwise face some difficulty in doing so. Also, you can be spared of some of the other side-effects of high protein foods like gas and tummy aches – now there’s a good enough reason to give tempeh a try!
Contains no cholesterol – With large parts of the population suffering from poor heart health, a nutritious food with no cholesterol is a godsend.
How do you consume tempeh?
Tempeh can be eaten in a variety of ways – cook it like you would any other curry, slice it up and pop it in your sandwich or add bits of it to your salad.
Is tempeh available in India?
Our search for tempeh in India, unfortunately, proved fruitless. Although, we’re sure that with the explosion of international foods in India, it will soon be available at a speciality store.
